a longing

(NaPoWriMo, day 15: the prompt was ‘to write a poem inspired by your favorite kind of music’. I don’t have an easy answer to what my favourite kind of music is, but I’ve been thinking about questions of voice and resonance (again inspired in part by the work of John Paul Lederach and his daughter Angela). This prompt made me think of times when I’ve enjoyed singing with others, often simple songs that have a circular quality. It’s one of the things that are difficult to recreate at this time of physical distancing, but I’m grateful for the lingering hums…)

to sing

together
quietly first
in a circle and in
ways that circle

round a fire perhaps

letting harmonies rise
and resonate into
ourselves each other
this space

and out of it
as a gentle hum
that lingers on
